Well, I thought that I would check to see how Aunt Nena got up to Canada from Belize to enlist in the Canadian Armed Forces in order 'to serve the empire'. I thought it was the same way that dad did but, being a good genealogist, I wanted to confirm her travel dates and modes of transport.
Dad received his Transfer Certificate (visa) to enter the United States in Belize on Jan 13, 1941. On Feb 9th 1941, he left Belize on the ship the S. S. Toloa, a United Fruit Company ship, sailing from Guatemala to New Orleans, arriving on February 13th 1941.
He spent about a week with his aunt Mrs. A. White (his mother’s sister) at 6655 General Diaz for about a week. Then his aunt put him on the Greyhound bus to Canada probably similar to the one in the picture below which was in operation in 1941.
The bus took 2 days to reach
Canada, stopping along the way in order for the passengers to have a meal. They entered Canada through the port of entry of Detroit and travelled on to Toronto arriving on February 21, 1941. He stayed at a
dorm for the night and then went to the Toronto manning depot to enlist the
next day, 22 February, 1941.
Nena received her transit certificate on September 4, 1943 allowing her to enter the US. The transit visa allowed her to transit to Canada over 6 days.
I assumed that she would have taken the same route as dad did but found out that she travelled by plane to Merida , in the Mexican State of Yucatán, to New Orleans on September 21, 1943. The plane was a Pan American Airlines NC-19903 - a Boeing 307- Clipper Flying Cloud' similar to the ones in the pictures below.
I am not sure if she took a bus from Corozal, where she was living at the time, to Merida, a 340 kms (5 hours) trip or if she flew from Belize to Merida and then on to New Orleans. Like her brother, she also stayed with her aunt, A. S. White at 6155 General Diaz for about 6 days but not sure if she then travelled up to Canada by bus like her brother did. That research will have to wait until another day!!
